The Sock Thief

The Sock Thief written by Ana Crespo and illustrated by Nana Gonzalez (2015)

Felipe lives in a small town in Brazil. On his way to school, Felipe takes socks from his neighbors window sills and clotheslines. He replaces the socks with mangos from the tree in his yard. He stuffs the first pair of socks with a newspaper ball and wraps each pair of socks around the ball until he has made a soccer ball. He and his friends play with the soccer ball during recess and before and after school. On his way back home, Felipe returns the socks with a note thanking each neighbor for the use of their socks.

Not only is this book fun to read because it is a good story, but on every page, readers learn at least one new Portuguese word, making it even more fun to read!

Of course, you should take your laundry basket of unmatched socks and make a soccer ball like Felipe’s. Set up a small goal and play with your child.
