Happy Sugar Cookie Day!

Sugar Cookies, Sweet Little Lessons on Love written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Jane Dyer and Brooke Dyer (2009)

This book uses sugar cookies to define and explain some really big words about love and compassion. Each page begins with a vocabulary word and then gives a cookie-definition. For example, ‘CONSIDERATE means, I waited until you got home so we could lick the bowl together.’ or ‘UNCONDITIONALLY means that even when you mess up the cookies, my love for you doesn’t change one single bit.’ And the last page has a recipe for Sugar Cookies of course!

Mmm, Cookies! written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko (2000)

When Christopher finds some play clay in the basement he decides to trick his parents. He makes a giant clay cookie, topped with icing, sugar, and raisins, for his mother. Then he made another for his father. His parents call the teacher to warn her that Christopher has clay cookies that he will try to give the students. But his teacher has a surprise of her own for Christopher… a clay cookie.  Then the class makes real cookies to take home, but Christopher’s parents are afraid to taste his!

Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar? written by Margaret Wang and illustrated by Christine Schneider (2006)

This is a funny retelling of the popular children’s song, ‘Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar’.  We sang this a lot in preschool and kindergarten sitting in a circle, clapping our hands on our laps and then together in rhythm and using our friends’ names to fill in the blanks.  This story takes the same rhythm and rhyming pattern for the various ‘suspects’  and adds an interactive element of counting the actually cookies on the page through cookies and holes in the pages, removing one cookie with each turn of the page. Very well done!
