May 20 – National Be a Millionaire Day

Happy Be a Millionaire Day!

Oh, you’re not a millionaire? That’s okay, most of us aren’t, but I do know some pretty great books to help us celebrate!

621740-2

If You Made a Million written by David M. Schwartz and illustrated by Steven Kellogg (1989) is a sequel to How Much is a Million? teaching kids more about the concept of one million and how it relates to money. It begins with easy to understand concepts of how much is a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar. From there it moves on to how to earn money, how to save money and accrue interest, and how money can be spent to purchase needs and wants.

902355How Much Is a Million? written by David M. Schwartz and illustrated by Steven Kellogg (1985) teaches kids in a fun and magical way exactly how to count to a million and the mathematical concept of one million. From there, they are introduced to a billion and a trillion.

621739Millions of Cats written and illustrated by Wanda Gag (Newbery Award, 1929) is a story that doesn’t define a million, but has the reader imagine having millions of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats. Eventually they old man and the old woman do end up with only one cat (But you must know before you share this book with very little ones, that the cats eat each other in the vain attempt to be the most beautiful.) And although the story is 85 years old, it is still being republished today.
