Happy Howl at the Moon Day!

Max and the Tag-Along Moon written and illustrated by Floyd Cooper (2013)

One night, as Max hugs his grandpa good-bye, he notices the moon shining behind Grandpa’s back. ‘That ol’ moon will always shine for you… on and on!’ Grandpa told him. As the drove away, Max looked up at the moon shining in the sky. He kept his eyes on the moon, watching as it followed him down the road. It seemed to Max, that the moon was tagging along right behind him. The moon traveled with Max over the hills, around the curves, and it even waited on the other side of the tunnel. But then it got cloudy and the moon disappeared. Max searched the sky, but couldn’t find the moon anywhere. ‘I guess that ol’ moon couldn’t shine for me all the way home’ Max thought and he got ready for bed. Upstairs in his dark bedroom, Max missed Grandpa and that tag-along moon. Then very slowly, the moon peeked out from behind the clouds and shone through Max’s window. Just like Grandpa said!

Baby Owl howled so frightfully that it brought out all the forest creatures to investigate. Each one tried to help, but Baby Owl kept howling. Porcupine asked if he had fallen out of his nest. Crow asked if he wanted to play. Squirrel asked if he was hungry. Mole asked if would like a nice flower necklace. And Stag Beetle pinched him because he wouldn’t stop howling. Finally, they made him a cobweb cradle to rock him. Then suddenly, Baby Owl stopped howling and flew up to the branch where his mother sat.  Mother Owl asked him why he was howling. Baby Owl looked at her and sniffed, “I forgot.”

For example, no one knows for sure why wolves howl, it could be to communicate with their pack, as a warning, or maybe just because it feels good to howl. The only thing we know for sure is that they howl at any time of the day and in every season.
