Story Element #8 PATTERNS Let me cheat just a little bit, I found this resource and there’s no reason for me to reinvent the wheel here. Literary Patterns explains 10 different uses of patterns in literature. All of which can be found in picture books. And, bonus… this site even gives an extensive book list for each of the ten types identified. So, please, check it out for yourself and I’ll just move along now.
Now, onto the book I’ve chosen for today…Bunnies!!!! Yes this book truly deserves three exclamation points. And with only 48 words in the complete text, you can bet the illustrations tell most of the story.
Bunnies!!! uses repetitive phrases and words throughout. Firstly, the main character, a long tailed horned polka dotted monster walks through the woods greeting the things he sees along the way.
Hello, tree. Hello, cloud. Hello, butterfly.
Then, he notices BUNNIES!!! He is overjoyed… He runs after them…
Bunnies!! Bunnies!! Bunnies!!!
But the bunnies run in fear. Poor monster. The bunnies hide from him as he wanders through the woods calling,
Bunnies? Bunnies? Bunnies?
Monster is sad. He continues through the woods saying hello to things he sees. But he’s not as happy as he was in the first repetition.
Then he spots the bunnies again, and takes off running after them a second time. When they disappear, he calls them as he searches.
Monster wipes a tear from his eye. He greets three more things on his walk. Then sits dejectedly on a log. He hangs his head. Then…
tap, tap, tap…
the bunnies have a change of heart and tap him on the back.
Bunnies!!! Bunnies! Bunnies!
They hug and dance and swing.
And, the pattern is broken when Monster spies…
Birdies!!!
Oh, what fun! Sure to be a preschool favorite!

Great example, Juliana. I’ll look for this, I’m challenged to write more for preschool listeners. Patterns are I’m sure a more critical key for that age reader/listener than perhaps others.

Aww, how cute! Sounds a bit like the repetition of Shh! We Have a Plan! though in that one, perhaps the lesson is not quite learned by the main characters.
