Based on the book, The Dot, written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds, Dot Day has become a day to foster creativity and free expression for artists everywhere, including and maybe especially for, ‘non-artists’ who believe they cannot ‘draw a straight line with a ruler’.

Vashti remains in her seat after all the other kids have left art class. Alone with her teacher, Vashti bemoans that she cannot draw. Her teacher encourages her to ‘just make a mark and see where it takes you’. Vashti angrily makes one solitary dot on the blank white paper. The teacher studies it and tells Vashti to sign the bottom of the paper. The next time Vashti comes into art class, she sees that her teacher has framed her dot and hung it on the wall behind her desk. Encouraged, Vashti thinks she could make a better dot. She begins making dots of different watercolors, then she mixes colors to make a dot of a new color, she even makes a dot by not painting a dot. Vashti’s many dots were displayed in the school art show. Another little boy told Vashti that he wished he could draw like she does, she gave him a blank sheet of paper and told him to make a mark. It was a squiggle. Hmmm….
