Cupcake written and illustrated by Charise Mericle Harper (2010)

Sweet and delicious Vanilla Cupcake was so excited to meet her colorful family. There was Chocolaty Chocolate Cupcake, Pink Princess Cupcake, Rainbow Sprinkles Cupcake, and Fancy Flower-Top Cupcake just to name a few. But at the end of the day, all of the other cupcakes had been chosen leaving Vanilla feeling very sad and lonely. Plain, ordinary candle knew just how he felt. Candle’s family was pretty special too. There was Number Candle, Letter Candle, Balloon Candle, and Super-Long Candle just to name a few. Both Cupcake and Candle were feeling sad, until Candle had a big idea… he tried lots of different toppings to make Cupcake feel better, but none of them was just right, until Candle hopped on top!

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond (2008)

In true Numeroff/Bond style, if you give a cat a cupcake you know there’ll be lots of other funny results until you’ve gone full circle. First cat will want some sprinkles, which of course will spill all over the floor. Cleaning the sprinkles will make him hot and tired, so he’ll want to go the beach, where he’ll want to get in the water and build a sandcastle, and look for seashells. Carrying everything in his pail will be too heavy for him, so he’ll want to go to the gym to work out… and on, and on, and on, until he empties the sand from his shoes which will remind him of sprinkles. And if you give him sprinkles, of course he’s going to want a cupcake!
