Happy Hug Your Kid Day!

821430Hug written and illustrated by Jez Alborough (2001)

This jungle tale of loving parent-child relationships is sure to touch your heart. Written with basically only one word, the meaning comes through the illustrations. As Baby Chimpanzee travels through the jungle, he spots all the animal families hugging each other. Mother Elephant gives her calf a trunk hug, the Snakes twist together and hug each other, the Lioness hugs and tumbles with her cubs, the Giraffes nuzzle each other, and Baby Hippo hugs his mama by lying on her back. Baby Chimpanzee cries out. All the animals of the jungle gather around to comfort him, but he remains unconsoled until his Mommy calls out his name, opens her arms wide, and gives him the biggest hug ever!

10247243How Do You Hug a Porcupine? written by Laurie Isop and illustrated by Gwen Millward (2011)

This story written in rhyme is sure to please young readers. A boy watches as all his friends hug various animals and wonders how he can hug a porcupine. Hug a cow around her neck, spread your arms out extra big to hug a pig, a chimpanzee will hug you back, climb a ladder to hug a giraffe… But how do you hug a porcupine? Carefully!
