May 22 – National Maritime Day

Happy Maritime Day!

Happy sailing, happy boating, happy yachting, happy cruising everyone!

Many of us were introduced to Scruffy the Tugboat written and illustrated by Gertrude Crampton in childhood. First published in 1945 it is still in publication today. It’s the story of a little toy boat who is unhappy floating in the bathtub and so he goes on an adventure down the river to the ocean.  It leaves the reader with a ‘no place like home’ lesson.

579143But today’s children get the much different experience with Tugboat written and illustrated by Michael Garland (2014).

17196749This isn’t a darling little toy, this is an actual hard-working tugboat. (This might be what Scruffy had been hoping for so many years ago.) Michael Garland shows the reader the jobs and responsibilities of a real tugboat in New York Harbor.
