March 30 – National Doctor’s Day

Happy National Doctor’s Day!

The first Doctor’s Day observance was on this day in 1933 and is celebrated in most communities to recognize the contributions of doctors.  Doctor’s Day marks the date when Dr. Crawford W. Long first administered anesthesia on a patient in 1842 to successfully remove a tumor on a patient’s neck. Upon awakening, the patient claims not to have felt a thing!  Now that’s something to celebrate!

The first doctor that came to mind, while I was thinking about picture books was Dr. De Soto, written by William Steig.  Dr. De Soto is a wonderful dentist who works with his wife, Mrs. De Soto.  And like Dr. Long, Dr. De Soto’s patients never feel a thing!

817316William Steig won the Newbery Award in 1983 for  Dr. De Soto.  Steig is also the author of ShriekSylvester and the Magic Pebble (1970 Caldecott Award), The Amazing Bone (1976 Caledcott Award), Abel’s Island (1977 Newbery Award), and many others.

Have a great Doctor’s Day… and feel no pain!

Thanks, Jane! Glad you could stop by for a visit. I love Dr. DeSoto and his wife too! I was actually thinking about getting this book for my dentist’s office.

I love this book and how the good Dr. & his wife outsmart the fox. 🙂
