May 4 – National Orange Juice Day

Good morning! And Happy Orange Juice Day!

Orange juice is America’s favorite breakfast drink. One 8 ounce serving of orange juice has 124 mg of vitamin C and also supplies potassium, thiamin and folate. Since breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day, may I suggest a nice glass of orange juice and your choice of picture books to read with it?

Orange Juice Peas! written by Lari Don and illustrated by Lizzie Wells, is a funny story of a little girl who is learning to use good manners, but hasn’t yet mastered the art of speech. So instead of saying ‘please’ Jessie simply says ‘peas’. Her babysitter doesn’t quite understand her requests by tries her best to fill them, resulting in odd combinations like orange juice peas.

Two books that take children through the life cycle of an orange and the process of making orange juice are Orange Juice (Scholastic) by Betsey Chesson and Orange Juice (Weekly Reader) by Gretchen Will Mayo.
